The Mombie

Mombies Unite!

I don’t believe that a life spent standing still is a life fully lived. But I know how difficult it can be to take a step – any step – when life pulls you in so many different directions at once.

My name is Shannon, and I am a mombie.

What is a mombie? To me, mombie – “mom-zombie” – has a few meanings. Obviously, I’m a mom. The Toddler King and his sister the Infanta are tough employers with exacting standards and fewer verbal skills than I would like, but when they smile at me I feel like Supermom. We are a family in flux, as the littles grow and change more every day. Add in a marriage, household, two cats, seminary, and my first church appointment, and it’s no wonder how Mom suddenly becomes Mombie.

But there’s more to it than that.

The core of my soul and the guiding force behind everything I do in this life is Christ’s unending, unfathomable love for me (and you!) and the work of the Holy Spirit in my heart. Like a zombie, but with better skin, I’ve been brought back from spiritual death through the grace and salvation of Jesus Christ: “For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.” (Eph. 2:6, NLT)

The Mombie Devotional

The Mombie Devotional is a continual work in progress. I invite one and all to journey with me through questions of parenting, family, and other relationships; faith, religion, and belief in a broken world; and the practical realities of home life and organization. I will also share reflections from seminary study and my work as a pastor, as well as sermon texts and other references that I find helpful. All opinions are my own and not intended to represent an official position from the United Methodist Church or any conference, district, or local congregation therein – even when I wish they were.

Handy site navigation!

To keep things simpler, you can find the vast majority of posts within three categories:

  • Growing in Faith
  • Family
  • Personal Organization

Of course, I will occasionally post about random things I read or see on the Internet – but my goal, of course, is that those things will somehow be relevant to faith, family, or organization. Use the color-coded posts and category tags to keep track of what kind of post you’re reading (if it isn’t already obvious!) You can also search for tags related to seminary, parenting, and other specific topics to find what you’re looking for.

I want to talk to the Mombie!
