Sowing the garden

heartstrings make tender roots
that strain toward the sunlamp
even as they burn from the heat
that drink deep of bitter tears
even as they disintegrate from the acid
and still they prove to be
the tastiest morsels for devouring

is it any wonder that my garden doesn’t bloom
when you trample growing shoots
to rip out tender roots
and have them for your supper

so I will hedge my garden
with foxglove bells
block your sunlamp with nightshade
filter your tears through oleander
and so, undevoured,
my heartstrings can take root
refreshed, renewed, and whole
